Student Drivers

A school permit allows eligible students to drive to school and related activities one hour prior to and one hour following an event, using the most direct route. This permit is valid for a maximum of two years, expiring on your birthday. It serves as both a school permit and instruction permit when not used for school-related trips.

What makes you eligible? 

You must have held an instruction permit for six months (remaining free of convictions and accidents during that time) & have completed a state of Iowa approved drivers education program .

School Permit Process

To obtain a school permit, students must first meet the eligibility requirements listed above. Once eligible, follow these steps:

1. Attend School Permit Meeting (held once a month)
   The student and a parent/guardian must attend one of the monthly meetings with a school official via Google Meet. Sign up using the link below or the button on the right.
2. Submit Required Paperwork
   Complete all required paperwork listed below and submit it to the High School Office. Paperwork may be emailed or hand-delivered.
3. Pick Up Signed Paperwork
   Once all steps above have been completed, the paperwork will be signed and available for pickup in the High School Office within 24 hours.
4. Visit the DOT
   Take the completed and signed paperwork to the DOT to complete the school permit process.

What paperwork is needed?

 1) Affidavit for Special Minor's Restricted License

• Complete Sections 1, 3 and 4: Parent or Guardian must complete this prior to submitting to the High School.
• Section 2 will be completed by the HS office

2) North Polk Letter

• Complete #6: Route: list your route by street name from your house to school.  Do not draw a map.  If there are two households, provide a separate form for both homes.  
• Student & Parent: Sign the letter.

Meetings are held virtually on the second Monday of each month at 7:45 a.m.

To attend a permit meeting:

1. Register by 8:00 a.m. on the Friday before the meeting.
2. An invitation link will be emailed to registered students and parents/guardians by the end of the business day on Friday.
3. Student and guardian both need to attend the virtual meeting on the scheduled Monday at 7:45 a.m.

When you have turned 14 and are eligible by the state of Iowa to obtain your instruction permit, we’ve partnered with the Iowa DOT for Skip the Trip at North Polk, allowing students to take the driver knowledge test for a permit right here at school, no need for extra trips to the DOT, even if they don’t pass the first time.  Please contact becky.clark@northpolk.org with any questions.
