North Polk Hosts First-Ever Girls Wrestling Meet

On January 4th, 2024, North Polk High School marked a historic milestone by hosting its first-ever girls wrestling meet. The school is currently in a cooperative agreement to send our five High School Girls Wrestlers to compete with the Ankeny Girls Wrestling team (AGW).

The meet showcased a competitive quad, featuring AGW in spirited matches against Algona, Winterset, and West Marshall.

The atmosphere was charged with excitement as these talented athletes demonstrated their skills on the mat. Girls Wrestling has earned its place as the 11th sport sanctioned by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU), following in the footsteps of bowling, which was added in 2007. Iowa, as the 34th state association to sanction girls’ wrestling, is embracing this progressive move in female sports.

This decision was solidified when the IGHSAU Board of Directors unanimously voted to sanction girls wrestling in January 2022. The first IGHSAU-sanctioned girls wrestling season took place during the 2022-23 school year. We look forward to watching this program continue to build.
